Yeah they are forced as your protagonist until you finish their chapter 4. Its a very large portion of the game if you dont race to the end with 4 characters and then do the other half after that. Even then thats still almost half the game if you go that way I finished chapter 4 with my starting character, chapter 2 with another character and only chapter 1 with the remaining 6. Therefore, it's not the case that the starting must be in my party for 99% of the game.
