Universes are divided into sessions with 16 possible people. Within those sessions, you can form groups of four with either friends or randoms. Basically, one person plays, the other join the first person's session and are teleported to their planet/local station for the duration. Any progress you make on your character is saved and continues on when you go back to playing solo. I assume you also return to the system you were on originally? Or can at least teleport back to it from the local station you're now on. You can turn on base-sharing, which means you can build a shared base together (although the base will technically belong to whoever started it), but otherwise you need to get your own missions from freighters/guild.

Me and my friend are currently plodding about in it for my channel. We're progressing slowly, but I feel that's how it is generally with NMS, unless you go out of your way to forcibly farm cash.
