And on top of that, he was an American NSA codebreaker who defected to the USSR but in reality he was working for the US the whole time, all at the age of 19? How does he keep all of his levels of double-crossing straight?

Lol that sounds about right for Ocelot but I think it can be argued Liquid actually possessed him in MGS2. After MGS2 he removed the arm and replaced it with the metal one that he has in MGS4. I think he underwent the psychotherapy between MGS2 and MGS4.
I think its implied that the whole FOXDIE scheme is a mutation of Zero's will through the Patriots even though Zero didn't actually do it. ---
