I think it is kinda a spineless move on their part I think you're right, it is more a spineless move than anything else. Folks dug these tweets up and made noise about them expressly so Disney would either have to fire him or deal with (dumb) controversy, and it worked. If there were more to the story, and Gunn had been credibly accused of living the talk of his bad, old jokes, I'd certainly agree he should be fired.
