I guess it depends on what you're looking at. For instance, there are games that you could consider precursors to some of the games on this list (Sweet Home leads to Resident Evil, Snatcher arguably leads to MGS) so they're important but they aren't the games that popularized the tropes, style, presentation, mechanics, etc that they helped to establish

and then there are some inclusions that make sense but for reasons that basically have nothing to do with the game itself, like sonic didn't do anything meaningful from a gameplay standpoint but obviously it contributed a lot to the console wars and the history of gaming

based on that criteria I kind of feel crash bandicoot should be on this list for the brief time he was sony's mascot

Sonic didn't do anything meaningful for gameplay? Are you serious?

- Momentum based gameplay
- In addition to walls and flat floors, there were plenty of graduated slopes
- Very complex levels, with tons of secret stuff, and 2 or 3 routes through levels
- Faster than most if not all previous games

How is that not advancing gameplay? It wasn't just the graphics and sound that were excellent, so was the gameplay.
