I got a much better ring for my wife than that and I make a fraction of what he makes and no, I didnt spend a fortune or go into debt or the ol x months of salary crap. Honestly it feels like he didnt put much thought or effort into it. Replying to both of these since they are a similar message. So at the end of the day, you're still down talking the guy for "not spending enough based on his income", which is similar logic to the "x months of salary" thing. If she's mad that she thought he should have spent more, then there are really not many ways to frame it other than her being materialistic about it.
