I'd say $1700 is a lot to spend on someone, regardless of income. Especially on something that's main purpose is SUPPOSED to be symbolic. I spent about $5k and my salary was probably only around $60k at the time. I felt like that was normal. I personally don't see much value in a piece of metal and stone, but I didn't want to make a statement about materiality at my wife's expense.
