Its using homophobia in an attempt to mock someone, as if being gay is something negative. The joke isn't that they are gay, it's that they are obviously in love and have a hugely inappropriate relationship for the leaders of two countries that are honestly pretty at odds most of the time, especially considering that their factual relationship is starting to look more like treason. You mean that people being in a gay relationship is still considered inappropriate by some? Good point. No, you are ignoring what I'm saying. Any relationship between world leaders is inappropriate. It's also a bit of a joke since both politicians have had a pretty negative experience with the gay community (with Putin being outright hostile).
