That picture was taken in the Midmay Clinic, one of the handful of HIV hospitals in Britain. That man died of AIDS a couple weeks later. The stigma around HIV/AIDS at the time was so bad that banks wouldn't loan money to employees of that clinic, bricks were periodically thrown through the windows, and many of the clinic's patients were completely estranged. And Diana shook his hand because she felt that showing compassion and humanity to victims of AIDS was more important than fearing them; a nearly unprecedented attitude to have at the time.
