i'm glad i never had to read Finnegan's Wake. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was supposed to be required reading in my 12th grade AP English class, but after getting off to a rocky start of it with group reading in class, literally no one did the assigned reading at home, and so the teacher just decided to scrap it and the lesson plan for it and move on to the next thing lol. he was pretty cool about it. he understood that it had.... shall we say, marginal appeal. iirc he even did say something about how we were lucky it wasn't Finnegan's Wake instead.

for what it's worth, my dad wrote his undergrad thesis on the beginning and end of Finnegans Wake. an in-depth study of the whole book is... probably more than a PhD's worth of material
