I'll try and compress this. When you merge a unit with the same star rating, the unit gets an additional 2 points in stats and +1 to their level (aka lvl 40 +1, not lvl 41). At 10 merges, a unit will have +4 to all of their stats (+2 * 10 = 20). It starts out by adding a point to your two highest stats, when the unit was level 1, the next merge will add a point to your next 2 highest stats and so forth.

As an fyi, if you promote a unit, all the merges they had will disappear. As another note, if you merge a unit with merges to another unit of the same star rating, the merges will carry over.
