as for TC: it's not like the farmers do this non-organic stuff just for fun. They do it because these sorts of things let them produce more food in less time/space/etc than they would otherwise. As population grows, we need more and more efficient methods of production which is why just saying something like "they didn't have it 1000 years ago we don't need it now" doesn't really work.

If you're particularly interested in organic food I definitely recommend starting up your own garden if possible, it doesn't need to be that big to provide a decent amount of food for a single person and you won't have to worry about all these chemicals and etc because they're not really necessary on a small scale
