The car is insured, not the driver. So if you were to get an auto insurance policy, you would need to own a car that would receive the coverage. And unless you have really shitty insurance, the policy on that car would cover anyone else driving it, such as a friend. The only way you would possibly get in trouble is if there was a regular driver of the car that you failed to list on the car (for example, if a husband and wife have a policy on a car but omit the husband as a driver because his bad driving history would cause the rates to go up).

So no, you shouldnt be required to prove you have auto insurance on you, since thats not how it works. If youre taking a driving test though, you might need to prove that the car you are using is covered.
