Because conservatives act as if this country wasn't constructed on the pillars of racism and inequality. Racism and inequality were certainly massive elements to the American story. But I would say the country clearly disagreed about the role those things played in our society, hence the Civil War. Classic example of how clueless most Americans truly are.
