It's based on a subset of Japanese culture that has nothing to do with blackface. It does, however, end up looking like blackface. This though doesn't look remotely like blackface, and it is more telling of the people that see blackface in a monkey costume than it is of the episode in question. I looked up images and descriptions for what jynx is supposed to be based off of and I'm still confused about where the black skin and clown lips are coming from. Why is it that everything has to be tied back to a practice that has been dead for a very long time? I doubt anyone has held an official minstrel show outside of maybe a private KKK meeting in decades, if not close to 100 years. Yes, the practice is offensive, but the act of someone painting their face black is not blackface in that context. If someone professionally paints their face to dress as Obama, they are not doing that to mock the Obama or the features of black people. I'm sure there have been people who have done the blackface stereotype as a costume, and people would be right to be offended at that particular depiction. Someone got in trouble for putting makeup on with a caption saying how black she was at a university near here a couple years ago.
