The story was that Luke still had the full Force at the end of TFA and the scene that they had filmed had Rey arriving to a Luke surrounded by a bunch of floating boulders (I know, sounds cheesy). Then Rian told JJ about his spin and JJ accepted it and changed the ending of TFA to be Force-less.
