Yeah, there was controversy, but seriously, the whole point of the character was that blackface is offensive. It wasn't like the joke was, "hahaha, that's what black people are actually like!" the joke was, "look at that air headed method actor who thinks that his performance is accurate because his head is so far up his own ass". It's the same as people saying To Kill A Mockingbird is a racist book because it has racists in it.
