yeah k, it's not that much (why would it be $5k? what exactly are you paying for with a price like that?)

http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/blog/map-ambulance-fees
How much an ambulance costs [in Canada]:
British Columbia $50 if treated on scene; $80 if transported to hospital
Alberta $250 if treated on scene; $385 if transported to hospital
Saskatchewan Depending on the health region, $245 or $325 + $2.30/km
Manitoba Depending on where you are in the province, the cost ranges from $270 + $3/km to $530
Ontario $45 if medically necessary, $240 if not medically necessary
Quebec $125 + $1.75/km
New Brunswick In New Brunswick those without private insurance don't pay ambulance fees.
UPDATE: In April, 2015, the province reinstated ambulance fees. Now, for those without insurance, the cost for an ambulance is $130
Nova Scotia $142.30
Newfoundland and Labrador $115
Prince Edward Island $150
Yukon No out-of-pocket charge to patients
Northwest Territories Varies by location
Nunavut Varies by location

I just remember as a kid after breaking my leg skiiing, my parents complaining about the ambulance bill. I do remember it was around $300, which sounded like a lot at the time.

That's in Canada. It's way cheaper in Canada. I dealt with a 2k ambulance bill in Nevada in 2007? Something like that. The insurance paid most but still hundreds out of pocket. It wasn't a long drive and it would have been shorter if every hospital could take every kind of insurance.

My sister in Alberta had to get an ambulance and a 40 minute ride to a city and it was 500, about 16 years ago.
