I hear that JRPG claim a lot (usually from those that have little experience of the PS1), but I think it's a pretty big misconception. The PS1 featured many genres (some extensively so); JRPGs, yes, but also platformers (Spyro, Crash, Oddworld, Tomba!), racers (Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer, Wipeout), fighters (Tekken, Street Fighter / Marvel vs. X, Soul Blade), survival horror games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fear Effect), stealth (Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu), strategy (Command & Conquer), 2D (SotN, Mega Man X), sports (Tony Hawks), even FPS (Medal of Honor), etc. That's just some of the obvious stuff.

You can argue all day about the quality (few will argue about the graphics, but that's certainly not unique to the PS1 in that gen, plus some games managed to buck that trend), but I would argue that the games mentioned above are *at least* good, some great (MGS, SotN and Tekken 3 at the very least).
