The time around the Barry Goldwater/LBJ presidential election changed things. Goldwater was staunchly against the Civil Rights act, and the Republican party used the southern strategy to appeal to the racists in the south that would vote heavily for the Southern Democratic party. LBJ signed the civil rights act into law and the people who used to vote for the Southern Democrats switched to voting for the Republican party.You've been fed Liberal BS.
