Ron/Hermione screamed canon from the first book and felt like a natural progression. Therefore, I would not have liked a Harry/Hermione pairing because it would have broken that progression, unless it was done as an interesting twist that turned the trio into a love triangle, only for them to reunite later.

That said, Ginny was uninteresting and didn't receive any significant development, nor did she and Harry have any sort of connection until later on. It would have felt more natural if, say, Harry and Cho had hit it off, but then Cho got killed by Bellatrix Lestrange or one of Voldemort's other thugs and Ginny was there to support him. As it was, Harry/Ginny just didn't seem to work for me, and the fact that the deuteragonist (I'm actually not sure if that's Ron or Hermione...) was the one who had the fleshed-out love story made the protagonist less interesting.

Due to the ending feeling incomplete and unsatisfying, I haven't cared for much in the way of further content and have hardly gone back to what was.
