The fact that some Americans are defending the decision to separate families by the US government makes me care less about the inevitable day that the US gets nuked.

People are being detained because they are in the country illegally. You can't just let them leave, they have to be deported back to their home country. So an amount of work has to be done to figure out who these people are, where they come from, and then organize their transportation back to their home. All of that takes time.
While this process is taking place, these people are held in a facility, basically jail, and none of the government employees has any idea who they are. Simply based on the law of averages, some of these people will be murderers, thieves, and pedophiles which means you can't place children in these detention areas with potentially dangerous adults. Therefore, the children have to be held in a different area.
It is the same reason why child welfare services will remove kids from dangerous homes and place them in foster care. No other country in the world allows illegal immigration and they don't house children in prisons with dangerous adults. If you have a problem with the US over this then you have a problem with every established country in the world.
