If it's the latter, and if pushing down on the area it was still works, it can be repaired pretty easily. With that being said, at 6 years, I'd be replacing the laptop anyway. Just the surface cap broke off, I can still press the exposed area down to get my p's but it is annoying. Just grab a key off a similar (broken or too-outdated) laptop to replace it, or 3D print one if you have access to a printer. :) Though once again, given the age of your machine I'd consider replacing it anyway. But this might help until you get around to that.
