The combat takes some time to get used to because it's literally a rhythm game so clicking furiously like in W2 & 3 will get you nowhere. Plotwise, I think W2 has the best story in the series. Be warned, there's a lot of backtracking in W1 and there's no horse or fast travel to make your life easier (I highly recommend you download the movement speed mod). Still, W1 is a good game to get your feet wet when it comes to the morally grey world of The Witcher.
