This happened in Canada, the judge was probably bribed or something

Sounds like Stand Your Ground laws here, where you have a much better chance of getting off scott free if you make sure the other witness(es) are dead, so it's harder to prove the killing wasn't "in self defense."
If the person you shot lives, you're in trouble. Better to unload all your rounds when you fire, to make sure he doesn't.
