I would work that much if it meant getting paid 100k a year.

Why?

Working 40 hrs a week for $50k is the same hourly rate as working 80 hrs a week for $100k.

It really just comes down to there being two kinds of people. Some people are "work to live" and other people are "live to work."

"Work to live" people want a good work-life balance more than anything. They will sacrifice some pay and some promotions just to keep a strict 40 hour workweek because having free time is vastly more important to them.

"Live to work" people are the workaholics. They get bored on weekends and on their days off because they have nothing to do. They don't really have any hobbies or anything. Their work is their hobby. Their work is their entire life.

Neither is necessarily better than the other. They're just two different personalities.

I will say though that "live to work" people have a difficult time adjusting to retirement, and that can be bad for your health. People who don't adjust to retirement well tend to have more health problems and/or die earlier.
