People just didn't get it and thought it was a slap at her appearance. I mean, Michelle Wolf made fun of her own looks during that whole thing too. I haven't seen The Hand Maid's Tale, so I wouldn't know about that character. She didn't make any mention of the character's actions or personality traits, just "I'm a little starstruck. I love you as Aunt Lydia in The Hand Maid's Tale." Googling the character, I can see why some would take it as a jab at her appearance. But then you get remarks like "she burns facts and uses the ashes to make a perfect smokey eye. Maybe its maybelline, maybe its lies."
