A good gauge is this:

If you feel soreness in the muscle but it mostly goes away once you've warmed up the muscle group and you can go through the exercise without any notable pain, you're fine. Make sure you're doing dynamic warm ups before you start hitting the weights though.

If it stills hurts after you've warmed up, your muscles are overworked or strained. Take a few days off at least and make sure you're getting good sleep. Sleep is super important!
