I've seen both and don't love either. I came into TLJ with high expectations and left a little disappointed. I came into Solo with low expectations and left vindicated. Neither of those are great.

I'm not a Star Wars 'fan,' and haven't seen the cartoons or read the books published after 2013. So apparently I missed a lot of stuff in Solo. Thing is I'm not entirely enamored with what's there either, so having all the easter eggs doesn't do much to raise my estimation of whatever I'm getting here. The best characters/performances were Paul Bettany and Emilia Clark. Paul because he plays a good faux affable villain and doesn't ruin it overstaying his screen presence and giving me time to nitpick. And Clarke is just great, lots of texture to this character (even if her final decision is kind of obvious), and her performance. Everyone else is kind of one note, suspended in continuity like flies in amber. TLDR, I didn't need Solo. After seeing it, I still don't.

I'm choosing TLJ. I respect the creative risks TLJ was willing to entertain in going it's own way even if it often fumbled the landing, and wasted potential all over the place. If I ignore the TFA as the set up and come into TLJ with no expectations, I still get a decent movie with some cool moments.
