It's called having a proper debate with them and converting them over to our side.

Converting the rest of them. Your current efforts have only gotten you so far, yet how many people out there are homophobic in the US? How long has it taken society to get to this point? How many lives were hidden because of it. We could've done far better by being mature and having a open discussion with society about this topic.
You'd do a better job by being polite, respectful, and not condescending to others, especially if you want to win them over.
You've still failed to provide any sort of compelling reason why it's necessary to treat them with respect. There's nothing to gain from treating homophobes with anything but derision since conditions for LGBT are only getting better despite them. Treating them with respect only benefits them, whereas the rest of society only sufferers for entertaining them. ---
