If you don't realize the film Planet of the Apes is about race in any fashion I don't even know what to say to you. There's zero subtlety

The original was an allegory to racial injustice in America in the civil rights era. Think of it as a take on Black Like Me. It was a reversal of things. How you're not aware of injustice until you suffer through it yourself. Yet it sadly had to use apes, something less than human, to make that point.

Using apes as a standin for non-whites (and particularly black people) had been common in Hollywood for much longer. King Kong is a prime example of the white fear of black men disrupting society and stealing white women. And it's all turned into an easy to digest monster horror film. Hollywood had been full of this shit since its inception.

That ape trope has been used so many damn times. Sometimes there's variety to it, like Dumbo used crows.
