speaking as someone who has been single for the past 5 years, and hasn't gotten laid in 4 of those years. Its difficult to deal with rejection in this day and age. Not to mention the amount of rape cases going around, where 2 people could have consensual sex, and the woman go off to the police and claim rape, fucking over his life(and this does happen, all the time in fact). You tend to be too cautious, and not want to break down the walls of communication.

Its a tough hurdle to get over, but eventually it does get better and easier to deal with. But sites like Plenty of Fish, OkCupid and Tinder don't exactly help.
