Yeah, Europe sucks for making these companies spam my inbox. It's probably a good change, though, but I haven't really researched it.

It is annoying, but it is good ultimately. It is Data Protection, but updated to actually properly consider how widespread the internet is in our lives now. It vastly broadens what is considered "personal information" and makes companies disclose it to you, as well as who is getting said information, what information and why - and gives you the option to decline such collection. Also making them use plain english when disclosing such information. Also applies to any website that deals with EU citizens. It enforces reporting any breaches of data and the list goes on.

Failure to comply with this will mean a fine of 4% of global annual turn over, or 20 million (whichever is higher) so pretty much every company seems to be scrambling to comply or moving things away like facebook has (but not even sure that exempts them, as dealing with EU citizens regardless)

The most amusing part of this is that you can see just how many companies aren't prepared to handle this as information sharing needs to be opt in, and not opt out (as even gfaqs currently is with many advertisers) which puts untold amounts at risk of fines. (At least, I think? I should look stuff up but that takes more effort than I care to use)
