Doctor Strange could use the portal to send it anywhere remote. Only anywhere on the planet from what we've seen. That wouldn't take him long. Especially as him and his children appear to be able to track infinity stones. Also if he kills Strange and takes the time stone, he just rewinds the area where the gauntlet was and gets it back. No possible way that Strange could have viewed realities that included future events that included Thanos rewinding time in a million and change possibilities.
