Interesting sidenot, but as big as that whole Nirvana / Pearl Jam "grunge" and "alternative nation" thing was between 91 and 95 or 96, funnily enough, the old bro band Metallica was monstrous during the peak alternative rock years. That band defied all the other 80's bands because they were authentic and had their own sound and slowly cultivated their following until it resulted in arena and stadium tours and hit singles / videos. They never stayed on trend, they CREATED their own trends. Their 5th album is the highest selling album since they started tracking sales in 1991.

Always a weird fact because it seems like Nirvana's 2nd album or Pearl Jam's 1st would have been a likelier candidate to be a bigger seller. I think each band got fazed big time by the immediate pressure placed on themselves. Metallica had been playing for about 10 years by the time they got the Nirvana-fame. It must be insane to go from club shows in front of a few hundred fans to playing 50,000 people festivals in a 6-12 month span.

As you can tell, I love this period of music a lot.
