First sentences are usually meant to try to grab the reader's attention, and the next to inform them of the events leading up to the current story. I try to expound upon the characters and their traits/mannerisms/lives while moving the story along at the same time. First person narratives I try to go with more of a stream of consciousness style, as I feel it's easier to write.
