I'm really bitter that my grandparents tried way too hard to assimilate so my dad (and by proxy, me) didn't grow up bilingual. It's something I've bitched about a lot over the course of my life. I finally decided "fuck it, I'm going to try to learn German." I saw the Duolingo app was much beloved and downloaded it. I didn't expect much, as language apps seems like they'd just be lame, like a book for teaching you martial arts, but it's really great. I could see myself actually getting somewhere with it.

There are tons of languages, even stuff like Hungarian. I recommend it if you're interested but lazy, like myself.

Not speaking your native language around the house isn't not assimilating. The only time it bothers me is when foreign people do it in front of me while they're working (ie at Wal-Mart). It's actually illegal. English or French only.

I need to try the app for Japanese. It was recommended to me when I asked for help with learning on the boards a couple months back. Nothing is as good as immersion, however.

Only German I know is from war games, Rammstein, and my friend explained to me why they have capital letters for what looks like random words (obviously not names) throughout their sentences. Which is because they capitalise all their nouns.
