Your body has to work harder to maintain bigger muscles so it burns excess fat to do so.

Or it just burns the muscle instead. But work hard enough and get enough protein and youre safe, so its still a great way to increase your TDEE (Too bad you cant know how much muscle you have unless you find out your body fat %, which is easier said than done.)
