What is England's population size compared to the US? The smaller and poorer the country, the longer they need to focus 100% on it. The US has fielded an okayish team while not caring about soccer at all. If a country of this size and money shifted their focus, it'd only take one generation.

England have 1/6 the population of the US (about 53mil). However, England invented football, it is their #1 sport, they have been playing for 150 or so years, and they have one World Cup to show for it.

Populations of some of the most successful teams:

Brazil: 207mil
Germany: 83mil
Italy: 60mil
Uruguay: 3.5mil
England: 53mil
Argentina: 44mil

The US have the ability to make the men's team a force (the money they have available for the women's team shows that), but it wouldn't take 20-30 years, it'd be more like 50-70.

China will be the example - a population of 1.4 billion, they have been pouring endless amounts of money into the sport and their goal is to win the World Cup in 2050.
