to be fair, it is very possible to build up a strong author platform independently when self-publishing, and self-publishing is not without its own merits and pros/cons versus traditional publishing.

also keep in mind that the notion of being traditionally published automatically coming with tons and tons of marketing is a huuuuuge misconception. you are basically on your own there most of the time too, unless you are already an established, famous household name. if you're not, then take whatever budget you think the publisher will afford for marketing your book and reduce it by about 95%, and you'll get closer to what they will actually spend.


I agree, but I still think the majority of self-published books are self-published because they aren't good enough to get the attention of a publisher or agent.
