That's such a strange view to me. Why not? You're not curious how other people live totally different lives in different cultures? You don't think going on a big adventure in a foreign land would make you a better person?

I don't want to spend time in a place that forces me to experience an inferior lifestyle. A lack of sanitation is gross, for starters. I acknowledge that people and places are different, and it's fine. I just have no interest in being somewhere underdeveloped.

A bunch of people I know are into that and their stories cemented this further. The biggest ones being stuff about a lack of toilets or plumbing so bad that people just put their poo toilet paper in a bin beside the toilet

They do that in some parts of china, leave the toil. paper in a basket. Many times those are not toilets but holes in the ground that flush usually.

Hard pass.

Good on anyone brave enough to accept that. I certainly can't.
