We barely ever use the laundry room on the premises. So I find the card for the machine and take it to the landlord's office to check the balance and add money if necessary. They tell me that I need to get a new card from the machine since they changed types (even though it's a card made by the same company.) I don't get one for free for living there. It's $5. I pay the machine for the card, and it comes preloaded with $3.50. Washer and dryer are each $1.79 a load, so that's enough for one or the other, not both. So I have to put another $5 on. If I want a refund for the balance on the old card, I have to mail it in, and there's no way of knowing in advance how much money is on it because the new machine doesn't read it and the amount isn't accessible in the company's database or anything; it's actually in a chip inside the card. So I guess I'll mail it and get a very small check eventually.
tl;dr I basically paid $10 to wash a few items of clothing.
