Women and minorities in the sciences is something noteworthy and potentially inspiring. White males are not. I don't disagree with you at all here. I actually would like to see them win because I think more female and minority role models in science would be great. However, this is still a competition. The races of everyone involved are not supposed to have an bearing on the winners. So when the girls mention their race in hopes of gaining an advantage, that is fair to criticize. If these girls end up winning and their school wants to promote them because they're female minorities, I have no issue with that. But they should win because they had the best invention, not because they pushed identity politics to get an edge. And, from a practical matter, the picture of the girls is already included in their tweet. Any voter who is likely to give them an edge because those girls are minorities already has all the info they need.
