I feel like they could have made it something more impactful, like Phoenix really does believe the orb belongs to Kurain village, and he wants to get it back so Maya can claim her rightful place as master, or something. It would have made that trial so much more emotional to see Apollo and Phoenix battle each other for their own ideals.
