I don't know if he really cares about this plan in particular, as much as he is obsessed with the concept of will. He knows it's an insane and horrible plan and that it would end up destroying his home and killing Gamora and such, but he still went through with all of it, because he wants to be the strongest will in the universe.

That theme is really relevant in modern society where we idolize anyone who has a strong will, regardless of what their will is actually leading towards. Making tough choices is seen as an inherently valuable skill, whether its a CEO firing a bunch of people, or a politicians dropping a bunch of bombs. There's this culture of "well, someone has to do it" and no one actually stops to think whether it even has to be done.
