He wants to protect Earth because of Jane, but he broke up with Jane... he wanted to make his dad proud, but his dad is dead. he wanted to be a hero to his people, but his people are dead. Almost everyone he has ever known over the 15,000 years he has lived is dead. Except of course, the Avengers.
