No one is surprised by this. It is well documented that socialism and communism collapse economies and force everyone into poverty. When socialists demand equality, what they really mean (as evidenced by their rhetoric and actions) is that they want everyone to be equally poor and equally starving.

Communism leads only to breadlines and chaos. Socialists have attempted it so many times that anyone who is still peddling it is literally peddling the flat earth model of the economics world.

Capitalism has demonstrably crushed poverty and increased the standard of living across the board.
