I played a bard who used a whip in a D&D game. He was the group's best front-line fighter because I could use the whip to demoralize all enemies within 30 feet of me and trip anyone who came within 15 feet, up to 3 times per round. So basically I would make all the enemies suck, knock them all to the ground, and then the fighters would run up and clobber the bastards while they were prone. Eventually I got a magic whip that I could control with thought which could tie enemies up with a grapple check.

My whip was so useful that every member of the party decided to get whips.
