$2,500 would get you a pretty good laptop but long-term a desktop is a better investment since you can upgrade what you want and they're easier to fix if something goes wrong with the hardware. Get a laptop if you value gaming anywhere you want in the house or if you travel around a lot (a gaming laptop is great if you often stay at other places).

With that money you could also consider getting both a desktop and a laptop. You can play games on your laptop using in-home Steam streaming if it's more about the convenience of playing anywhere you want in the house. But it won't be as portable as an actual gaming laptop.
