never a movie on a first date. you want to talk. get to know each other. movies are not ideal for that.
a meal is good. imo breakfast and lunch are ideal - if it goes well, it's super easy to spend more time together, and if not, you still have the rest of the day so you don't end on a bad note.
you could even do a meal and go to a movie afterwards if it goes well, but a movie shouldn't be the main focus.
I've had a few first dates that were brunch or lunch. a few where we went for a walk. one where we went out for drinks at the end of the day. anything that allows you to talk to each other uninterrupted - or mostly uninterrupted - is good.
